Summary

In June 1961, a witness in Springfield, Massachusetts, observed a luminous object for 3.5 hours. The object, described as the size of a half-dollar and orange in color, appeared motionless in the sky. However, it would shrink to a vanishing point over five minutes and then rapidly return to its original size, repeating this cycle continuously. The official report classified it as a reflection on a thermal inversion layer, an explanation that didn’t fully satisfy investigators. The witness, at an open-air drive-in theater, found no other plausible explanation for the phenomenon.

The object's location pointed toward Westover AFB, and weather conditions were favorable for optical phenomena, including high clouds and a thermal inversion. Although the evaluating officers suggested it was a reflection, the testimony and the repetitive nature of the event left room for doubt. This case is an example of how UFO reports often face conventional explanations, but also leave space for speculation.
