🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In July 1961, an aerial observation in the Pacific recorded a luminous object moving from northeast to south. The report, classified under Project 10073, describes a "streak of light" seen for 5 to 10 seconds by an aircraft at 21,000 feet altitude. Observers ruled out the possibility that it was the Echo I satellite, as it was moving north-south at the time. The description of the object as a "streak of light" and its short duration suggest it could have been a meteorite. However, the possibility of a satellite re-entry was also considered. Despite the unusual nature of the sighting, authorities concluded it posed no threat.
The report was distributed to multiple military and intelligence agencies, including the army, navy, and CIA. It was noted that the object was not photographed and the final evaluation did not reach a definitive conclusion, although conventional explanations such as balloons or aircraft were ruled out. This case reflects the government's interest in investigating unidentified aerial phenomena during the Cold War, an era in which any unidentified object in the sky generated concern.
