🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In August 1961, two military pilots reported a bright object in the sky over Northern Highlands, California. The object, described as white and as luminous as a first-magnitude star, was observed for 20 minutes before disappearing over the horizon. Despite the unusual duration, investigators concluded it was likely an artificial satellite, specifically Echo I, whose trajectory matched the sighting. The description and movement of the object supported this theory, though it was noted the estimated time might have been exaggerated.
The observers, considered reliable, did not take photos or use radar, limiting physical evidence. However, the official report classified the case as resolved, attributing it to the Echo I satellite. Such reports were common at the time, when confusion between space objects and aerial phenomena was frequent. The case reflects how the military tried to provide rational explanations for sightings, even when conclusive data was lacking.
