🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
On August 14, 1961, multiple witnesses in Cleveland, Ohio, reported observing unidentified objects moving at high speed near the sun. The objects traveled in a straight line through the solar corona, displaying considerable brightness—between one-third and half that of Echo I, a known satellite. The sighting generated so much interest that phone lines were overwhelmed with calls from citizens reporting the event.
An investigator from the SOHIO Research Laboratory confirmed the observed objects were balloons, leading the report to be categorized as such. However, details like exact altitude and object shape remained uncertain. The possibility of seeds carried by strong winds was considered, but further investigation was still deemed necessary.
