In August 1961, residents of Inwood, New York, observed strange flashes of light on three consecutive nights. Witnesses described an orange light that appeared and disappeared within a few seconds, changing direction and location. Although they were trying to track a satellite they had been observing, the mysterious object appeared before and after its passage. Each sighting lasted between two and four seconds, making identification difficult.
The official report could not reach a clear conclusion, as it was considered that there was not enough information to determine whether it was a balloon, an aircraft, an astronomical phenomenon, or something else. The lack of photographs and the brevity of the sightings contributed to the uncertainty. Despite this, witnesses insisted the phenomenon was unlike anything usual, which caused some local concern.
