Summary

In September 1961, a witness in Albuquerque, New Mexico, observed several silvery objects moving erratically from west to east. The objects disappeared to the south at a 50-degree elevation, appearing like reflections of the sun on a shiny surface. On two occasions, the main object emitted smaller silvery objects, about one-sixth its size. Despite a detailed description, investigators concluded that the data was insufficient for a definitive evaluation.

The report mentions a thermal inversion of 3 degrees between 16,000 and 18,000 feet, leading to the suspicion that the observed objects might be reflections from this layer. The lack of other witnesses and the inability to confirm the presence of aircraft or weather balloons contributed to the uncertainty of the case. The responsible officer, Major Virgil Hall, suggested it could be an optical illusion caused by the atmospheric inversion.
