Summary

A civilian pilot reported a strange phenomenon over the Pacific in 1961. While flying at 2,500 feet, he noticed a bright red ball with white streamers just above the horizon. The object stretched horizontally and gradually disappeared. Although visibility was good in the direction of the sighting, the pilot could not clearly identify the object. The dense atmosphere and refraction may have contributed to the confusion. The observation lasted about one minute.

The most likely conclusion is that the pilot saw Venus, distorted by the atmosphere. The description of the red object and its characteristics match how a planet might appear under certain conditions. The disappearance of the object is attributed to the planet setting. Despite the initial confusion, the report suggests there was no evidence of an unidentified object.
