Summary

An object the size of a baseball was observed in the sky above Gettysburg AFS, South Dakota, on October 16, 1961. Witnesses reported unusual flight patterns, including abrupt turns and a heavier-than-usual contrail. The object appeared from the west, moved northeast, then turned south and finally southwest, remaining visible for 20 minutes. Initially thought to be a balloon or astronomical phenomenon, investigators concluded it was likely an aircraft. Two B-52s were in the area at the time, and it was suggested that weather conditions and sunlight could have altered the observers' perception.

The official investigation did not rule out the possibility of an unidentified object but pointed to a conventional explanation. It was noted that the object's movements, while unusual, did not contradict the capabilities of aircraft available at the time. The heavy contrail and sudden turns could have been caused by temperature layers in the air or sunlight reflecting off the aircraft. Despite the prolonged sighting, no photographs or radar records were taken, limiting the possibility of a more precise confirmation.
