Summary

A detailed report describes the observation of an unidentified flying object in Mackinaw, Illinois, in November 1961. Two farmers working in a field noticed a bright light in the sky. After stopping their tractors, they observed the light breaking into multiple smaller lights. These lights flickered without a clear pattern and moved as a compact cluster. The witnesses described the main light as extremely bright and white, remaining stationary for several minutes before disappearing. The event lasted 3 to 4 minutes.

An intelligence officer from the 169th Tactical Fighter Squadron investigated the case. The witnesses, including an aircraft mechanic, could not identify the object as a known aircraft. The possibility of it being a refueling tanker operating in the area was considered. The light pattern and movement matched those of a KC-97. Despite the absence of visible navigation lights, it was concluded that there was no evidence the object was extraterrestrial or a threat to national security.
