🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In January 1962, an unidentified object was observed in Kirksville, Missouri, drawing attention from radar and ground witnesses. The report indicates that the object appeared on radar at half the size and intensity of a normal aircraft, which caused some confusion. Although initially thought to be an aircraft, the collected data suggested it was more likely a weather balloon. The object ascended to a height of 72,900 feet before descending to 55,000 feet, maintaining a steady course with a speed of 1500 feet per minute. The observation lasted approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes, but the radar lost track of it when the object reached an altitude of 2000 feet.
The evaluation of the report concluded that there was insufficient data for a definitive assessment, but comments highlight that the object's behavior and weather reports support the balloon theory. Despite the ambiguity, subsequent analyses found no more convincing explanations. This case reflects the complexity of UFO reports from that era, where technological limitations and lack of clear information made a clear resolution difficult.
