🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In March 1962, a witness in Bethel, Alaska, observed a bright red, semi-circular object. The object remained visible for three minutes near the horizon. Although initially confusing, investigators concluded it was a misidentification of the setting moon. Atmospheric refraction distorted its appearance, giving it a reddish hue and an unusual shape. The moon officially set at 12:45, just two minutes before the sighting, supporting this explanation.
The observation occurred under clear, cold, and windy weather conditions. The witness attempted to get a better view by approaching a radar tower, but the object disappeared before confirmation was possible. Despite initial confusion, the report concluded there was no evidence of an unidentified object, but rather a common astronomical phenomenon distorted by the atmosphere.
