🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In May 1962, in Athens County, Ohio, strips of aluminum were found in farmland. One side was pink and the other aluminum-colored. Farmers believed they might be part of a radioactive test. Sheriff Harold E. Shields sent samples to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where it was identified as chaff, a material used in military operations to confuse radar systems. Although not an UFO in itself, the case was filed under Project 10073, which investigated unexplained phenomena.
The sheriff reported that several farmers had found the fragments and were concerned about their origin. The air force base confirmed the material was chaff, but did not explain how it ended up in the fields. The case was considered resolved, though the farmers' curiosity remained. This type of incident, though not related to UFOs, was common during the Cold War, when secret military operations were frequent.
