Summary

In July 1962, a witness in Carlsbad, New Mexico, observed a bright object in the sky that initially caused confusion. The object, seen through binoculars, displayed red and green colors alongside white and remained visible for 25 minutes. Although it appeared to move in an unusual way, the investigation concluded it was the planet Jupiter, known as the "evening star." The witness, an associate minister, later admitted to the identification and expressed regret for the time spent.

The Walker AFB base received the report and classified it as an astronomical phenomenon. The witness's exact location and weather conditions were recorded with precision, including wind direction and speed at different altitudes. Despite no photos or radar involvement, the report was filed under Project 10073. The Air Force concluded no further action was needed, and the case was closed as a misidentified astronomical event.
