Summary

In August 1962, in the Gulf of Mexico, the Coast Guard cutter Triton observed a bright object with a long meteor-like tail. The object, yellow/white in color, moved at a speed similar to a jet aircraft, at a medium altitude parallel to the surface. The sighting lasted about three minutes, and the sky was dark and clear. Although several possibilities were considered, such as balloons, aircraft, or astronomical phenomena, no definitive conclusion was reached. This case is part of a series of reports from Project 10073, which collected data on unexplained sightings.

The report was distributed to multiple military and intelligence agencies, including the Air Force, the CIA, and NORAD. Despite various theories, the object did not exhibit characteristics of a common rocket, balloon, or falling star. The detailed description and precision of the observation reflect the seriousness with which these cases were treated at the time, although in many cases the phenomenon could not be identified.
