🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
A civilian observer in Port-au-Prince, Haiti reported an object in the sky on August 30, 1962. The object appeared as a bright disc with an antenna and a colorful gaseous envelope. It remained stationary for about 10 minutes, slowly rotating, before vanishing in seconds. Although the witness used a theodolite to observe it, there was no sound or movement detected. The official report concluded that the object was the planet Venus, whose position matched the description exactly. The confusion was attributed to atmospheric conditions distorting the view and the proximity of the star Spica.
The description included details such as the object's double hub shape, its silvery color, and what appeared to be exhaust ports. However, later analysis confirmed that Venus, in its lunar phase, could have looked similar under certain conditions. Factors like thermal inversion and the observer's lack of familiarity with astronomical objects contributed to the misidentification. Despite the mysterious appearance, the report concluded there was no evidence of any threat.
