🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In September 1962, a farmer in Quincy, Washington, discovered a metal fragment in his field after plowing. The object, identified as an aluminum alloy type 3003, was analyzed by ABD and concluded to not originate from outer space. The timing coincided with the disintegration of Sputnik IV, leading to multiple sightings in the region, including reports from pilots and weather observers. Although initially considered a space-related event, analysis confirmed the fragment was terrestrial, though its exact origin remains unresolved. Confusion between natural objects, satellites, and atmospheric phenomena was common during this era of intense space activity.
