Summary

In September 1962, an observer on a vessel in the South China Sea reported an object passing close to their ship. The object was moving from south to north, trailing sparks and having a distinct shape, which set it apart from a typical meteor. Initially thought to be burning satellite debris, the sighting duration and proximity to the ship raised questions. The official evaluation concluded it was a meteor, but several details suggest it wasn't a typical astronomical event.

The report notes the object was observed for 4 to 6 seconds, with no photos taken. Although other explanations like balloons or aircraft were dismissed, the report leaves room for the possibility of something unusual. The timing coincided with the decay of a satellite, adding intrigue to the case, though no direct link was established.
