A Mississippi River pilot observed an object leaving a contrail and exploding at an estimated 20,000 feet. Although the witness denied it was a meteor, authorities evaluated it as such. The case was not considered worthy of formal investigation. Around the same time, other sightings in Jacksonville and Argentina reported strange lights and objects near the ground, though they were also dismissed as information-only cases.
