Summary

A bright, elongated object was observed for 30 minutes before dawn in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1962. A civilian witness described a star-colored object with a vapor trail above it. Despite the long observation time, investigators concluded it was likely a balloon or part of a military operation called Firefly. However, the object remained at about 25 degrees elevation in the southeast, raising doubts about whether it was actually a balloon or something else.

Confusion grew when considering that the star Spica was also rising in the southeast, but its brightness would diminish with the rising sun. Despite theories, there was no interception or identification of the object, and no known air traffic was recorded in the area. The responsible officer, John R. Quirk, attributed the sighting to the Firefly operation, although no physical evidence confirmed this explanation.
