🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In January 1963, a 40-year-old officer in Los Angeles reported a bright object in the sky. He observed it with and without a small telescope, describing a light similar to a star. The object appeared 20 degrees east and 15 degrees south of vertical, moving southeast until it disappeared after ten minutes. Weather conditions were clear with excellent visibility. The report concluded it was likely a satellite or aircraft, though no definitive identification was made.
The official report classified it as "ECHO I," a category indicating unidentified objects with possible explanations. Despite the clear description and use of instruments, no identification or follow-up actions were taken. The responsible officer suggested it could have been an aircraft departing from local airports. This case reflects the difficulty of distinguishing between natural objects, satellites, and aircraft during a time with less observational technology.
