🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In May 1963, a silver balloon was observed in the Pacific at high altitude, generating multiple sighting reports. The object was seen by Ocean Station Victor and confirmed by flights from Pan Am and United Airlines. Although initially reported as an unidentified flying object (UFO), a later evaluation determined it was a common balloon. This case reflects the confusion that often arose between non-conventional aerial objects and natural or artificial phenomena.
The balloon was observed for over an hour and estimated to be at around 15,000 feet, but it was also reported to be above jets at 33,000 and 35,000 feet. Despite the lack of radar contact, several aircraft clearly observed it. The Navy evaluated it as "no threat," indicating it was neither hostile nor of unknown origin. This case is an example of how UFO reports often resolved with conventional explanations once more information was gathered.
