🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In June 1963, a civilian in Sioux City, Iowa, reported seeing a circular object resembling a large star. The object was observed for 15 to 30 minutes, moving in a straight line northeast before "stopping." Although the witness reported no sound or unusual activity, military analysts concluded it was the ECHO I satellite passing over the area at the same time. The object's description and trajectory matched the known characteristics of the satellite, leading to the dismissal of the UFO hypothesis. However, the perception that the object stopped created some confusion, though it was attributed to an optical illusion.
The sighting was officially documented by the Sioux City Air Defense Sector. Weather conditions were clear, and there was no significant air traffic in the area, except for a SAC aircraft flying nearby. Despite the lack of physical or radar evidence, the report concluded the phenomenon had no mysterious explanation. The ECHO I satellite, used for communications, was known for its bright appearance and seemingly erratic movement across the night sky.
