Summary

In November 1963, a pilot from Eastern Airlines reported a bright object descending from the sky with a trajectory typical of a meteor. Observed from an altitude of 37,000 feet, the object changed color to a golden haze and left a glowing trail. The pilot described a yellowish-orange, non-metallic glow that intensified as it approached, before disappearing in about three seconds. Although balloon or aircraft possibilities were considered, the data pointed more toward an astronomical phenomenon. The official report classified it as a meteorite, but other explanations were not completely ruled out.

The case was investigated by the Air Force, which concluded it was a common meteor. However, the witness insisted the object had no tail, making it different from typical meteors. Additionally, the observer inquired about other cases in Illinois, such as the one in Fairfield, where an object caused radio interference. The Air Force responded that there was no evidence the object was extraterrestrial or radioactive, and it was a common rock with layers of pyrite and calcium compounds. Despite the observer's doubts, authorities found no elements suggesting a non-terrestrial origin.
