In July 1992, Russian pilot Vladimir Molokanov vanished during a flight returning from a training base in Chukotka. His Su-27 never reached its base in Komsomolsk-Na-Amure, and contact was suddenly lost near the Shantarskiye Islands. A three-month search followed without results. Theories ranged from mechanical failure and pilot unconsciousness to escape abroad or even UFO abduction. Despite analyzing communications and investigations by military and diplomatic intelligence, no explanation was confirmed. The only plausible theory was a dual engine regulator failure, which allowed continued flight, yet no trace of the pilot or aircraft was found.
Molokanov's disappearance was not isolated. He was the second pilot from his unit to vanish under mysterious circumstances. Authorities could not determine the cause with certainty, and the possibility of a UFO, though unconfirmed, remained one of the most intriguing explanations. This case remains one of the most enigmatic in Russian military history.
