🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In January 1964, a bright light was observed near the coordinates 33.58N 164.15E, in the Pacific Ocean near Tonga. The report, from the USS Matagorda, describes a ground-based visual sighting of a luminous object moving in a southeast direction. The light was as bright as a first-magnitude star, leading observers to classify it as a satellite. However, no ECHO equatorial crossings or other orbital data could be confirmed, leaving open the possibility that it was not a known satellite.
The final evaluation concluded the object was a satellite, based on its description and flight characteristics. Despite this, other possibilities like balloons or aircraft were not ruled out, though no photos or radar data were reported. This case is part of a series of sightings that show how military authorities tried to identify unconventional objects in the sky, often with limited data.
