Summary

In February 1964, a witness in Rivesville, West Virginia, reported an unusual object in the sky. The object, described as red on the outside, blue in the center, and with a tail, was moving at an estimated speed of 2,000 to 3,000 mph. Most striking was that it stopped in mid-air for about five seconds before disappearing. Although the initial report considered the possibility of a weather balloon, the object's description and behavior didn't quite fit that explanation.

The Air Force evaluated the case and concluded there were conflicting data. A meteorologist suggested it could have been a radiosonde balloon, but wind and trajectory calculations didn't confirm this hypothesis with certainty. The witness, a teenager troubled by the experience, wrote several times to authorities seeking more information. His testimony reflected both confusion and genuine interest in understanding what he had seen.
