Summary

In May 1964, a ground observer reported the sighting of a satellite over the Pacific Ocean, near the coordinates 30N 140W. The object was seen for more than five minutes, initially appearing at 45 degrees elevation and 282 degrees azimuth. Over time, it moved northeast, reaching an elevation of 50 degrees and an azimuth of 10 degrees. Although other possibilities such as balloons, aircraft, or astronomical phenomena were ruled out, the official conclusion pointed to a satellite. The report was distributed to multiple military and intelligence agencies, highlighting its significance at the time.

The report, part of Project 10073, was processed by the U.S. Air Force and shared with key organizations like the CIA, DIA, and NORAD. Despite no photographs being taken, the detailed description and trajectory were enough to classify the event as a satellite. These types of records, though routine at the time, reflect the constant sky surveillance during the Cold War, when any unidentified object warranted analysis.
