Summary

In June 1964, a physicist and his friend observed two flying objects near Flathead Lake, north of Polson, Montana. The objects were at a high altitude, and one resembled the Echo II satellite, which the witness had seen before. The objects approached each other and one made a sudden, sharp turn at high speed, while the other continued in a slower, more erratic path. The description of the objects' behavior created confusion, as one seemed to follow the pattern of a satellite and the other that of an aircraft. The official report concluded that one object was the Echo II satellite and the other an aircraft. However, the lack of precise data such as the duration and exact direction of the objects made it difficult to fully assess the event.

The official U.S. Air Force report responded to the witness with an explanation involving the Echo II satellite and an aircraft at high altitude. It was suggested that the sudden turn observed could have been caused by the aircraft changing direction. Despite this, the physicist's testimony, supported by a friend and an approximate diagram of the event, showed a consistency that could not be ignored. The case was forwarded to Dr. J. Allen Hynek for further evaluation. The witness, being a physicist with experience in astronomical observations, added credibility to his account, although the lack of precise information such as the exact duration of the sighting limited the investigators' ability to confirm the nature of the objects with certainty.
