In June 1954, during a solar eclipse, several witnesses in Helsinki captured images of an unidentified object in the sky. The photographs showed a round object that did not appear to be the moon or a cloud. In one image, the upper edge of the object was illuminated as if the sun were shining on a hard surface, while its center appeared dark. These reports generated curiosity, especially since experts could not explain what was seen in the photos. Additionally, in Maarianhamina, another elongated object was photographed shortly after the eclipse, appearing in several consecutive images. Witnesses described strange shapes and unusual movements that did not match anything known at the time.
The attention was not limited to Finland. In Norway, a photographer managed to film unidentified flying objects in color during the same eclipse, from an aircraft at high altitude. The objects appeared as bright disks with contrails, moving rapidly in the opposite direction of the plane. In Austria, a contractor and two companions reported seeing a reddish object over the Tennen Mountains, which moved irregularly for two hours. These events, though unconfirmed, added more mystery to the unexplained aerial phenomena of the era.
