Five high school students in Newport News, Virginia, reported seeing a triangular object with white and orange lights near the James River on January 31, 1965. The sighting occurred during a snowy night with limited visibility. The students, sledding near the river, first noticed the object at a 45-degree angle. The object descended southward before turning northwest, remaining visible for about 20 minutes before disappearing. No physical evidence was found, but investigators considered the possibility of a boat, though witnesses said the lights didn't resemble typical boat lights.
The official investigation couldn't conclusively identify the object. Air traffic and balloons were ruled out due to poor weather conditions. A bridge operator confirmed no upstream vessels were present at the time. However, investigators couldn't fully dismiss the boat theory, given the slow movement and common river traffic. The students, deemed reliable, noted the object was close to the water but not touching it. Snow and wind might have caused optical illusions, further complicating the identification.
