In April 1991, an unexpected explosion shook the small town of Sasovo in Russia, leaving a large crater and causing minor injuries. The blast was preceded by a strange roar and occurred at 01:30, without typical earthquake damage being recorded. Experts found no changes in radiation levels or air composition, complicating the investigation further.
The unusual shape of the crater, with a bump in the center and unbroken earth chunks, cast doubt on it being caused by a bomb or artillery shell. Local mayor A. Rozhkov suggested saltpeter, a substance that can self-explode under certain conditions, might have been stored in the field. Although no UFOs were reported, the lack of a clear explanation keeps this event on the list of unexplained phenomena.
