🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In July 1965, an observer at Gunnison National Monument in New Mexico reported seeing an object zigzagging across the sky. The object, described as a bright star, was observed for approximately 15 minutes before slowly disappearing over the horizon. Although initially thought to be an unknown phenomenon, investigators concluded it was the satellite ECHO I. This satellite, launched by NASA, was in orbit and its seemingly erratic movement was attributed to atmospheric conditions or an optical illusion.
The report notes that the satellite was over the observation area at an elevation of 43 degrees north of Albuquerque. Its zigzag path and apparent speed changes were attributed to the observer's perspective and weather conditions. The report, classified by the Air Force Special Weapons Center, was part of a routine investigation into unidentified flying object sightings. Although the case was resolved, it remains an interesting example of how space phenomena can be misinterpreted from the ground.
