🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In August 1965, a series of sightings in Suffolk County, New York, drew the attention of both military and civilian observers. A large object with over 100 bright lights was seen for more than an hour, maneuvering over the coast and controlled airspace. Pilots and air traffic controllers attempted to identify it without success, and a strobing effect similar to neon lights was reported. Eventually, it was discovered to be an aircraft with built-in lights advertising a store opening.
The official investigation concluded there was no evidence of an unexplained phenomenon, but the case illustrates how advertising lights can cause confusion and alerts in sensitive environments. The report, initially classified, reveals how efforts were coordinated between civilians and the military to solve the mystery.
