Summary

In August 1965, during the historic launch of the Gemini 5 spacecraft, amateur photographer James R. Peek captured images of what appeared to be an unidentified flying object. According to his account, the object appeared seconds after liftoff, near Cape Kennedy, Florida, and was moving at high speed in a westerly direction. Peek, an experienced optical technician, described the phenomenon as a brilliant green phosphorescent light making a sort of S-turn around the rocket's contrail. Initially, he thought he had missed the chance to capture anything interesting, but after developing the film, he discovered he had captured not one, but three moving objects.

However, the story didn't end there. The images were analyzed by Air Force personnel and RCA quality control experts, who concluded that the objects were film defects. Despite this, the controversy persisted, as some observers believed the objects were not mere technical flaws. The case was documented in several official reports and news articles, including one in the Orlando Sentinel, which highlighted Peek's experience. Although technical analysis pointed to a conventional explanation, the mystery of what the camera actually captured remains a topic of debate among UFO researchers.
