Summary

In November 1965, an unidentified object was sighted near Bedford, Virginia. Two police officers and a radar operator confirmed the observation. The object, described as a bright ball of fire, was moving at low altitude against a 55-knot wind. It was estimated to be between the size of an orange and a basketball, and it blinked on and off periodically. A patrolman observed it for 50 minutes, describing a pattern of white light turning orange as it moved from east to west. Despite investigations, no radar contact or known aircraft were found in the area.

The investigation included checks with the FAA and weather services, which reported no weather balloons or aircraft in the area. A radar operator with eight years of experience also participated without success. The object finally disappeared over the horizon toward Roanoke. Although conventional explanations were ruled out, the report concluded that the object could not be identified, leaving the sighting unresolved.
