🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In August 1966, a witness in Syosset, New York, reported seeing a bright object crossing the sky for about thirty minutes. The object, described as first or second magnitude, moved from northeast to southwest. Despite the observation duration, officials concluded it was the Echo I satellite, although it was not visible at that time. The report suggests the witness might have confused the observation with another satellite, as over 30 satellites were visible at that time.
The official response from the Department of the Air Force acknowledged the sighting and recommended the witness contact the Space Tracking and Detection Center for more information. Although the specific satellite was not confirmed, the case reflects how UFO reports were often linked to known space objects. This document, though brief, illustrates the interaction between the public and authorities during the Cold War era, when interest in the unknown was high.
