🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In September 1966, a civilian in New York City observed a mysterious object in the sky. The object appeared darker than the night sky and did not shine as brightly as the stars. Although initially considered a potential UFO, investigators concluded it was likely a large balloon with wires, commonly used for advertising. The witness observed it for two hours, noting that it moved slowly eastward before returning to its original position. Other citizens had been watching the same object for nearly nine hours, suggesting it was stationary or moved very slowly. The object's description, combined with the long observation time, supports the theory that it was an advertising balloon.
The official Blue Book report, managed by the U.S. Air Force, found insufficient evidence to classify the object as an unexplained phenomenon. The witness was asked to complete a detailed form for further information, but the case did not progress beyond a preliminary evaluation. Despite the duration of the observation and the number of witnesses, there was no physical evidence or photographs to support a more mysterious explanation. Ultimately, the report concluded the object was likely an advertising balloon, a common explanation for similar nighttime sightings.
