In October 1966, multiple witnesses in Patchogue, Long Island, observed an object emitting red, white, and green lights. The witnesses, including police officers, reported that the object moved very slowly and at one point appeared to stop. The observation lasted over two hours, ruling out the possibility of conventional aircraft. Air traffic authorities did not report any unusual activity, increasing uncertainty about the nature of the phenomenon.
The star Sirius, which was low on the horizon, was considered a plausible explanation. A detective confirmed that Sirius was in the position and elevation reported by the witnesses. However, the witnesses insisted that what they saw was not a star. Although other theories, such as publicity balloons, were explored, no conventional explanation resolved the mystery. The case remains an enigma for many.
