In October 1966, a witness in Southampton, Long Island, observed a luminous object in the southeast sky for about 30 minutes. The object, which emitted intermittent lights in red, green, and yellow, remained almost stationary. Observers did not notice any sound or exhaust, suggesting it was not an aircraft. The initial description was considered consistent with an astronomical observation, but doubts soon arose.
Later investigations revealed that the object was actually a fake photograph of the planet Jupiter or a bright star like Rigel. The analysis showed that the images contained star trails and that the photographed object was simply a long exposure of the Moon or a star in motion. Despite the evidence, the official report concluded that the phenomenon was of astronomical nature, although doubts about the authenticity of the testimonies were not entirely dismissed.
