🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In July 1967, a 14-year-old in Appleton, Wisconsin, claimed to have seen a UFO that looked like two bowls put together. According to the report, the yellow object, estimated at 100 to 200 feet in diameter, hovered and was photographed. The witness, Greg Verhoeven, used an Argoflex 75 camera with Kodak 620 film, and despite having no manual adjustments, managed to capture a blurry image of the object. The photograph generated significant interest, leading to multiple investigations by the Air Force and local police.
Photo analysis revealed that the object in the image was not what it seemed. The image showed an elliptical, blurry object much smaller than the witness estimated. Experts concluded the object was likely a terrestrial object, between 1 and 1.5 feet in diameter, about 15 feet away. Although the official report classified it as a hoax, the story illustrates how testimonies and images can cause confusion, especially when dealing with unidentified aerial phenomena. The collaboration between the witness, police, and the Air Force highlights the rigor with which these cases were addressed in the 1960s.
