Summary

In July 1968, personnel at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska reported an unidentified aerial phenomenon that raised some concern. At 03:00 local time, several air traffic controllers observed a large orange or yellow light in a clear area of the sky south of the base. The light did not move much laterally, except slightly westward, and gradually dimmed until it disappeared into the haze that had moved into the area. Observers contacted Airbanks RAPCON, who reported radar returns south of Eielson AFB. Although the light did not show significant movement, its behavior did not match that of a conventional object.

The investigation concluded that the sighting could not be attributed to a common astronomical phenomenon, such as the Moon, nor to an object launched by local civilian or government agencies. Although radar data partially coincided with visual observations, there was no clear correlation between the two. This, along with the lack of a clear explanation, led to the classification of the phenomenon as an "Unidentified Flying Object" according to Air Force protocols. The complete report included testimonies, weather conditions, and radar analysis, but no definitive explanation was found.
