Summary

In December 1956, an observer in the Soviet Union reported a mysterious object crossing the sky between 19:38 and 19:40 local time. The witness, using a telescope to observe Mars, described a bright object of magnitude 3, similar to the star Crion, moving from north to south. There were no signs of disintegration, flares, or noise, and the object did not fall. Although no photographs were taken, the observer claimed the object was identical to Sputnik III. However, subsequent investigations ruled out this possibility.

The CIA reviewed the report and concluded that Sputnik III was not visible in the area or direction mentioned. Additionally, the carrier rocket for Sputnik III had reentered Earth's atmosphere on December 3, 1958, according to a Soviet announcement. The report was evaluated by air forces and other units, but no further dissemination was indicated. This case illustrates how UFO sightings were rigorously analyzed during the Cold War.
