Summary

In December 1956, an observer in Leicester, UK, reported an artificial object in the sky with constant brightness, similar to the Belt of Orion. He saw it through a telescope between 18:36 and 18:40 local time while observing Mars. The object moved from north to south without signs of disintegration, smoke, or noise. Although he did not photograph it, the observer was certain it was Sputnik III. However, later investigations showed that Sputnik III was not visible in that area or direction at the time, and its carrier rocket had already reentered Earth's atmosphere on December 3, 1956, according to a Soviet announcement.

The CIA evaluated the sighting and concluded it did not match known orbital calculations. Despite requesting further assessment from other agencies, no evidence supported the object's identity as Sputnik III. This case reflects the confusion and need for verification during the early space age, when any unidentified object warranted attention and analysis.
