Sighting of lights and radar echoes in Balearic waters

Summary

In February 1979, the ship "TAMAMES" recorded an unusual phenomenon in the waters of the Balearic Islands. At 21:17, the crew observed lights with amber-red reflections and detected radar echoes. As they approached, the lights disappeared and intense radar signals appeared, similar to a radar beacon (RACON). No distress calls or communication were heard.

The signals persisted until 23:50, then disappeared. At midnight, new echoes appeared ahead of the ship, moving slowly without visible identification. By 3:00 AM, everything returned to normal. The report concluded there were no reasons to keep the document classified, and it proposed declassification.
