🇦🇺 National Archives of Australia
Australia showed interest in investigating unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in the 1960s, particularly through the Commonwealth Aerial Phenomena Investigation Organisation (CAPIO). This organization requested government support to study UFOs, inspired by the U.S.-funded Colorado Project. Led by physicist Edward Condon, the Colorado Project involved experts in psychology, meteorology, and astronomy, aiming to analyze sightings and explore scientific explanations. Despite efforts, the Australian government remained skeptical, arguing there was no clear evidence that UFOs were real phenomena. However, CAPIO insisted that serious research could help resolve an international issue. The debate highlighted the tension between official science and alternative theories about UFOs.
