In 1954, an Australian citizen wrote to authorities to report an unidentified flying object in the sky. The letter was forwarded to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), which responded that they had no specific knowledge on the subject. Although unable to offer a concrete explanation, the report shows how Australian authorities treated UFO sightings with a degree of seriousness, though without giving them much importance. The case was shared with other institutions, including the Department of Civil Aviation, in search of a possible scientific explanation.
The document also includes an interesting theory proposed by a minister, who suggested that "flying saucer" sightings might be related to meteor shower dates. This hypothesis was not dismissed and was considered a valid possibility, though no definitive conclusion was reached. The files show how, at that time, UFOs were seen as phenomena that could have natural explanations, such as light reflected on clouds or atmospheric phenomena. Nevertheless, eyewitness accounts were recorded and analyzed, though without a prioritized approach.
