In 1978, Australian pilot Frederick Valentich vanished while flying a Cessna 182L over Bass Strait. His last communication with air traffic control mentioned an unidentified object following him, described as a "metallic and shiny" craft. Despite an extensive search, no trace of the plane or pilot was found. Years later, an engine part was discovered on Flinders Island, suggesting the plane may have crashed into the sea. The UFO theory remained alive among his family and some investigators, though authorities did not confirm any supernatural cause.
Valentich's case remains one of the most intriguing aviation disappearances, blending realism with mystery. The search for answers continues, fueled by testimonies, discoveries, and the lingering uncertainty surrounding the event.
