Summary

The declassification of the Spanish Air Force's UFO files marked a milestone in European ufology. Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos, a pioneering researcher in the scientific study of unexplained phenomena, pushed for this initiative in 1990, convinced that transparency was key to avoiding rumors and sensationalism. His work, based on decades of analyzing over 600 cases, led to the creation of the Fundación Anomalía, an institution dedicated to academic research on unexplained phenomena. In 1992, the Spanish Air Force began opening 84 files dating back to 1962, allowing the scientific community and ufologists access to previously inaccessible information.

Most of the analyzed cases had conventional explanations, such as stratospheric balloons, meteors, or perceptual errors. Only 13% presented insufficient information, and nine cases remained unsolved. Despite this, Ballester emphasizes that there is no conclusive evidence of extraterrestrial phenomena. The declassification not only provided scientific data but also influenced other European countries, such as Switzerland and Sweden, which adopted a more open stance on UFO files. This initiative demonstrated that transparency can be a powerful tool for demystifying the unknown.
