Summary

On the night of October 27, 1954, two French gendarmes returning from a night shift on their bicycles noticed a strange white patch in the grass. While discussing it, they heard a detonation and saw a large burst of sparks from the ground, accompanied by a whistle and a hum that quickly moved northeast. Although they saw no object, the gendarmes approached the site and found only startled cows. Later, an investigation revealed flattened grass in a 1.6 by 1.3 meter area and a nearby fence that had been torn. The gendarmes ruled out the cows as the cause of the damage. Although a pyrotechnic device was considered, the possibility of a military explosive left behind was also raised. However, the lack of a crater or visible object led the case to be deemed inconclusive.

The GEIPAN, France’s organization for studying unexplained phenomena, classified this case as "C"—meaning it has no scientific value due to insufficient information and verification. Although the gendarmes' accounts matched, no conclusive physical evidence was found. The time was ripe for UFO rumors, and it was not ruled out that media enthusiasm might have influenced the interpretation. Despite everything, the case remains an unsolved mystery, with a description that doesn't easily fit any conventional explanation.
