Summary

In September 1952, the United States Navy recorded several unexplained aerial incidents near Portland, Maine. In one of the first sightings, a P2V aircraft reported seeing two unidentified flying objects. One appeared dark with no visible lights, while the other had lights arranged in a circle. Although radar confirmed the presence of the objects, there were discrepancies in the reported times. The pilots attempted to approach, but the objects performed evasive maneuvers, complicating their identification. The report concluded that this was not a common atmospheric phenomenon and recommended further investigation.

A similar incident occurred a few days later, on September 23, when another P2V observed an unidentified object for over a decade. The pilot and co-pilot described visual contact from 23:49 to 00:08, while radar detected it intermittently from 23:52. The object maintained a constant altitude of 4000 feet and remained between 3 and 5 miles away. Despite efforts, its speed and identity could not be determined. Additionally, there was no other known air traffic in the area, increasing the uncertainty about the object's nature.

These incidents, officially recorded by the U.S. Navy, are clearly unexplainable with the knowledge of the time. Although the objects could not be identified with certainty, the reports highlight the need to continue investigating unconventional aerial phenomena. The collected data, including pilot testimonies and radar records, are consistent and do not appear to result from errors or hallucinations. These cases are an example of how even the most advanced armed forces in the world have struggled to explain certain sightings in the sky.
